Nicky to play in Celtic Legends Charity Match

Former Westlife star, Nicky Byrne, today confirmed that he’ll be heading to Paradise to play in the #19 Legends’ Charity Match, on Sunday, September 8.
A self-confessed Celtic fan, Nicky has already made one appearance at Celtic Park, when he played for the Hoops in the 2011 Legends match against Manchester United, in support of Celtic Charity and Oxfam’s East Africa Appeal.
And he’s hoping that this time, he’ll mark his appearance with a goal. Speaking exclusively to the official Celtic website, the singer/songwriter said: “I’ve built up quite a relationship with Celtic over the years, It started during my time with Westlife when we had many Celtic legends come down to see our concerts at the SECC.
“And it continued with me shooting an Irish TV show called Football’s Next Star where we found a young Irish lad to sign for the Hoops (Gareth McDonagh, who is currently at Celtic).
“I was also lucky enough to wear the Hoops in the Legends game a couple of years ago, and that’s a moment I’ll cherish forever. However, I should have scored on the night.
“So I didn´t need to be asked twice to take part in another game and pulling on the famous green and white shirt.”
And Nicky, who was a promising goalkeeper as a teenager, having a two-year spell with Leeds United before his career took a different turn and he found international success with Westlife, is delighted to have been asked to play in this game for a player he has long admired, both for Celtic and Aston Villa.
“Like many others, I was dumfounded when I heard the news about Stiliyan’s illness,” he said. “How such a young fit guy in his footballing prime could be struck down like he was is still unbelievable.
“So this game will be a marvellous occasion for everyone, especially Stiliyan, and it’s one that I’m very, very lucky and proud to be a part of. I even fancy myself for a goal on the day, although I say that every time.”
A host of other stars have already been confirmed for the match including Henrik Larsson, Neil Lennon, Lubo Moravcik, Chris Sutton, Pierre Van Hooijdonk, Jorge Cadete, Morten Wieghorst, Didier Agathe, Roy Keane, Paul Lambert, Shay Given, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Brad Friedel, Robert Pires and Patrik Berger.
